Sedex were at the start of their UXD journey and needing to go at speed. With limited research resource, we had to upskill the product and design teams to carry out evaluative research on their own and enable the organisation to build at pace whilst maintaining a great experience.

Democratising research

What I did

As Lead UX researcher, a large part of my role included overseeing all research activity within the Product and Design teams. This meant ongoing coaching of team members who were new (and not so new) to carrying out primary research. As well as this, I carried out several more focused research training sessions.

Usertesting.com overview and tips

Like many young design organisations, Sedex had been using remote unmoderated usability tools to run quick feedback testing session. This can be a great resource to teams if used within the set parameters it’s suited for but can also lead teams down dead ends.

My first training session focused on when to use and crucially when not to use this tool and how to get the most out of it.

Discussion guides and moderating

The second session focused on thinking through the discussion guide - how to work out what to ask and what not to ask, how to structure the documents for easy use during the session and what to do when you hit common challenges during sessions. We also discussed the difference between neutral and leading questions, as well as how to take notes during sessions.
